Highgate Hill House School Staff Achieve Makaton Training Milestone

Highgate Hill House School is celebrating a significant step forward in its commitment to becoming a Total Communication school, as all staff have successfully completed their Makaton training. This achievement reinforces the school’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment where every learner can communicate effectively and confidently.

Makaton is a unique language programme that uses signs, symbols, and speech to support communication. By embedding Makaton into daily interactions, Highgate Hill House School is ensuring that all learners, including those with communication difficulties, have the tools they need to express themselves, understand others, and fully engage in their learning.

Kerry Taylor, Principal of Highgate Hill House School, expressed her pride in the team:

“I am incredibly proud of our staff for their dedication to completing Makaton training. This milestone brings us one step closer to becoming a Total Communication school, ensuring that all our learners have access to the support they need to thrive. Communication is at the heart of everything we do, and this training strengthens our ability to provide an inclusive and empowering learning environment.”

Tracey Storey, Founder, CEO, and Executive Chair of Melrose Education, praised the school’s commitment:

“Highgate Hill House School’s focus on communication reflects our core values at Melrose Education. Equipping staff with Makaton skills ensures that every learner is heard, understood, and valued. Highgate Hill House School continues to develop its Total Communication approach, ensuring that learners have a range of tools to support their individual communication needs. The successful completion of Makaton training is a key milestone in this journey, reinforcing the school’s commitment to inclusion, accessibility, and excellence in education.
